‘Michael Jackson’s Ticket Sales Break International Records

Michael Jackson - Puff Puff Give Me!
Documentary has sold out hundreds of screenings across U.S. a month before its release.
Even in death, Michael Jackson continues to be a guaranteed superstar. Just as the initial run of his planned concerts at the O2 arena in London sold out almost instantly earlier this year, the posthumous documentary about the King of Pop’s preparations for that residency, “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” has broken advance ticket sales records for a movie.
According to Reuters, hundreds of screenings in North America have already sold out, a month before the film’s October 28 opening.
Among the cities with the strongest sales are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and New York. Records were also set in Japan, where more than $1 million in tickets were sold on the first day they were available. In London, fans bought more than 30,000 tickets on the first day, eclipsing the advance interest in the “Harry Potter” and “The Lord of the Rings” films, which were wildly popular in Britain. Record sales were also reported in Holland, Sweden, Belgium and New Zealand.
The documentary will have a limited two-week run, which might explain the rush on tickets. On Sunday, all 3,000 spots for a Los Angeles advance screening of “This Is It” on October 27 sold out within two hours.
The film follows Jackson as he rehearsed and prepared for a 50-date run of concerts, which were scheduled to begin in London just weeks after his death on June 25. Sony Pictures Entertainment paid $60 million for the more than 100 hours of hi-def rehearsal footage. The film, which was directed by Kenny Ortega, will feature behind-the-scenes footage as well as Jackson and his band and dancers rehearsing for the tour.
Last week, it was confirmed that a two-disc album featuring a new song, “This Is It,” will be released on October 27 to coincide with the movie’s theatrical release. The new single drops on October 12.

Dan Rather’s $70M lawsuit against CBS thrown out

A New York court on Tuesday dismissed Dan Rather’s $70 million breach of contract lawsuit against CBS Corp., noting that the network continued to pay the anchor $6 million a year even after he left the evening news broadcast.
Rather sued CBS and its top executives in 2007, claiming he had been removed from his “CBS Evening News” anchor post over a report that examined President George W. Bush’s military service.
The Appellate Division of the state Supreme Court — New York’s trial-level court — said the complaint “must be dismissed in its entirety.”
The five-judge panel ruled unanimously that a lower court “erred in declining to dismiss Rather’s breach of contract claim against CBS.”
The court said there was no breach of contract, because CBS still paid Rather his $6 million annual salary after the disputed 2004 broadcast under the “pay or play” provision of his contract.
Rather’s lawyer, Martin Gold, said he was “extremely disappointed” in the decision and would appeal it to the Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court.
CBS said in a statement it was pleased with Tuesday’s ruling.
“The lawsuit is now effectively over,” CBS said.
The dispute began with a piece Rather narrated for the now-defunct “60 Minutes II,” in which he reported that Bush got preferential treatment during his Vietnam War-era service in the Texas Air National Guard.
Rather cited new documents CBS had obtained, but the authenticity of the documents later came under attack.
Rather kept reporting for “60 Minutes” but was dumped by CBS in June 2006 after 44 years with the network.
His 2007 lawsuit claimed fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, as well as breach of contract. A court threw out the fraud claims in September 2008.
CBS said it expects Rather’s related lawsuit against CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves and Andrew Heyward, former head of CBS News, to be dismissed, as well.
General counsel Louis Briskman said that action “is technically still pending, but it’s hanging by a thread.”
Rather, 77, now produces an hourlong news program for cable channel HDNet.
Phone Call halts Craig and Jackman play

'Answer the phone bitch'
Actors Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman halted a performance of their Broadway play because of an audience member’s ringing mobile phone.
Secretly filmed footage of the incident last week posted online sees Jackman tell the patron to answer the phone during a performance of A Steady Rain.
“We can wait,” Jackman is seen saying. “Don’t be embarrassed - just grab it.”
The Wolverine star and 007 actor play Chicago policemen in the play, which officially opens this week in New York.
Both remained in character throughout the incident, footage of which was obtained by showbiz website TMZ and subsequently posted on YouTube.

‘New Moon’ Taylor Lautner Ripped

Bulking up for a meatier role in the next “Twilight” movie was hard work, Taylor Lautner says. He gained 30 pounds of muscle while on a strict diet and exercise routine.
But it has been even harder putting that buff bod out on display for fans to drool over, the “Twilight Saga: New Moon” star told Us Weekly magazine.
“It’s actually quite uncomfortable knowing so many people are seeing that,” he said. “It’s a little bit embarrassing!”
Last week a new shirtless picture of Lautner from the “Twilight” set caused a stir. The photo was released to promote the “official illustrated movie companion” to “New Moon,” a book due out Oct. 6. Lautner — with shirt — also graced the cover of the October issue of Teen Vogue.
