“American Idol”: More Instruments and Shorter Shows

American Idol
Though the show American Idol is always top in the ratings, producer Nigel Lythgoe says there will be some fine tuning changes to the show to keep audiences interested.

Step 1: Find more contestants with the ability to play musical instruments and sing like this season’s winner guitar player David Cook.

“We are going to keep the idea of being able to play instruments,” he said. “I really like that. I’d like to see a really good singer/instrumentalist.”

Step 2: Less time spent on the auditions. Sure laughing at people making a fool of themselves is entertaining but there’s going to more focus on the meat of the show with those that can actually sing.

“That felt like a healthy thing to do in terms of the setup of the show, getting through all the audition phases that people still love,” he explained. “But now, everyone knows the format… They say, ‘let’s get to the legitimate competition.’ I think you will see some fine tuning.”

Step 3: Shorter results show. Think 30-minute shows instead of the dragging on forever.

That’s the best change. Less Ryan Seacrest is always better.

Also this season the show will venture to Puerto Rico for the first time to hold auditions.
