Billy Joel: Plays At Shea Stadium

Billy Joel will perform tonight (July 16) and Thursday (July 18) in New York’s Shea Stadium for what’s being dubbed “The Last Play At Shea.”

The Mets will be moving to Citi Field to play next season and Joel’s concert marks the last rock show before the place is torn down. The performance will be documented for a DVD commemorating the event.

Joel is the only artist to have played at both of New York’s Stadiums: Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium. (He played two shows at Yankee Stadium in 1990.)

There hasn’t been an in-season rock show held at Shea Stadium since 1992 when Eric Clapton and Elton John performed.

Shea Stadium also hosted the Beatles in 1965 when they became the first pop group to play a concert at a U.S. sports stadium.
