David Cook: Wins “American Idol”

A record number 97.5 million viewers voted David Cook into the number one spot ahead of David Archuleta as their “American Idol.”

The 25-year-old won by 12 million votes which surprised many people expecting David Archuleta to take the victory. Judge Simon Cowell had predicted David Archuleta to win and apologized to David Cook even though Cook wasn’t offended.

“I didn’t really know if the apology was warranted,” Cook later told reporters backstage. “I thought what he said was an opinion and nothing more. At no point did I feel disrespected. Yeah, I’m appreciative of the fact that he decided to apologize. An apology from Simon is a pretty rare gem.”

Cook won a recording contract with Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment and Sony BMG as well as an SUV. It was also a big day for Fuller, the show’s creator, who was named the most successful British music manager of all time by Billboard magazine.

Hopefully this guy doesn’t get axed from his recording contract and disappear like some former idol winners.
