Fire At Universal Studios

In Universal City, California today a large fire broke out at an Universal Studios lot, damaged millions of dollars worth of property and burned for over 12 hours on the 400-acre lot before it was finally put out.
The blaze ruined a set from “Back to the Future,” a King Kong exhibit and a streetscape that is frequently used in movies and TV and also destroyed thousands of videos of Universal’s movie and TV shows. Fortunately, no one was injured and the videos can be replaced.
“We have duplicates of everything,” said Ron Meyer, NBC Universal president and chief operating officer. “Nothing is lost forever.”
Another fire started by a security guard in 1990 caused $25 million in damage and sent that guard to jail for four years after he plead guilty to arson. The cause of this blaze remains under investigation.
