Helio Castroneves: “Forgot” About $5M In Taxes

October 2, 2008

Helio Castroneves may have won the Indianapolis 500 twice and also took home top prize on Dancing With The Stars but the Internal Revenue Service isn’t too impressed with his tax records.

Castroneves, 33, is looking at charges for conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion after he failed to mention $5.5 million in income from 1999 to 2004. He could now be looking at hard time as each of those charges carry a 5-year maximum jail sentence.

Castroneves’ sister Katiucia, 35, who is his business manager and attorney Alan R. Miller, 71, also are facing charges and set to appear in court on Friday.

Castroneves reportedly siphoned income from a sponsorship deal as well as income from Penski Racing to offshore companies to avoid the taxes associated with the earnings.

“This case sends a clear message that the IRS is committed to vigorously enforcing the tax laws and stopping offshore tax evasion,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
