Justin Mentell Killed in Crash

The one-car crash that killed Waukegan actor Justin Mentell on a rural Wisconsin highway Monday cut short a promising future in art, drama and music, friends of the young man said Tuesday.
Mr. Mentell, 27, co-starred as Garrett Wells on the ABC-TV series “Boston Legal,” appeared in several Hollywood and independent films, played drums.
“He was an actor, artist, drummer, athlete,” she said. “He was an amazing young man.”
Mr. Mentell appeared in 16 episodes of “Boston Legal” before the show ended in 2006.
Chief Deputy Jon Pepper of the Iowa County, Wis., Sheriff’s Department said Mr. Mentell was driving a 2005 Jeep Cherokee east on Wisconsin Highway 39 when the car went off the road, struck a tree, went down an embankment and struck another tree about 35 miles southwest of Madison near Blanchardville. The area is rural, and Highway 39 starts a curve at the point where the Jeep left the road, Pepper said.
Police were called just after 8:30 a.m., though authorities believe the crash happened between 4 and 4:30 a.m. Pepper said Mr. Mentell, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was alone in his vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt.
