Mark David Chapman: Lennon’s Killer Denied Parole Again

Mark David Chapman gunned down Beatle John Lennon in 1980 and has been in prison for the last 27 years. Today he was up for parole for the fifth time but he was again denied even though he’s had a clean disciplinary record since 1994.
The parole board made the decision to deny Chapman parole because they feel he is still a threat to the public and that he told the board that he planned and carried out Lennon’s murder “with an essentially clear mind.”
Yoko Ono, Lennon’s wife, wrote to the parole board in 2000 pleading that they not release “the subject” because “With his one act of violence in those few seconds, [he] managed to change my whole life, devastate his sons, and bring deep sorrow and fear to the world.”
The parole board received about 50 letters from Lennon fans for this parole hearing asking to keep him behind bars.
Chapman will remain in New York’s Attica Correctional Facility for at least two more years.
Chapman has been enjoying conjugal visits for at least 16 of the past 27 years from his wife Gloria Hiroko Chapman. The two are able to spend 44 hours straight together in a special modular private homelike setting under the Family Reunion Program.
Gloria reportedly visits about once a year.
