Paul Newman: Dead at 83

Legendary film star, Paul Newman, passed away yesterday in his Westport, Connecticut after a battle with lung cancer.
The actor, 83, shot to fame in the 50’s appearing in films like “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Exodus,” “The Hustler,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting” and “The Verdict.”
Newman also started a food company “Newman’s Own” in 1982 and donates all the proceeds to charity. The Hole in the Wall Gang camp has benefited from his generosity and 135,000 seriously ill children have attended the residential camp - free of charge.
Newman leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward and their three daughters. He was also married to first wife Jackie Witte from 1949 to 1958 and leaves behind two daughters from that marriage. (His son Scott Newman died in 1978 of an accidental drug overdose.)
In June of 2008, Newman’s lung cancer started to affect his day-to-day life and in August it was reported that he had finished his chemotherapy and planned to die at home.
He was reportedly surrounded by his family and close friends at the time of his death.
