Portia de Rossi and Ellen: To Wed

Ellen and Portia
Ellen DeGeneres announced on her show Thursday that she plans to wed longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi after the California laws against gay marriage were struck down.

Rossi, of “Arrested Development,” was in the audience and the couple got a standing ovation in response to the announcement. Rossi,35, and DeGeneres,50, have been together since 2004 and per the Supreme Court ruling could marry as early as next month.

DeGeneres is well known for her outspoken stance for gay rights, which made headlines when her character came out of the closet on the show “Ellen” in 1997. The show became the first on prime-time network TV to have an openly gay lead and got many cheers from gay civil rights organizations.

She told Allure magazine in 2005, “I never would have thought my life would have turned out this way.To have money. Or to have a gorgeous girlfriend. I just feel so lucky with everything in my life right now.”
