Sean Delonas Shoot the Monkey Comic

Seems everyone is claiming racism after Sean Delonas did his cartoon depicting two police officers shooting a monkey. Depicting black people as monkeys has a long history, pretty curious as to why Sean Delonas picked this cartoon for his “satire”.

Racism or Reading too much into this?

I think they are just saying that any monkey could have written the stimulus bill. I’m not a racist person, so I didn’t see anything racist about it. I can see where someone else with deep hatred or racist tendencies might let their mind wander to that type of thinking first.

It could even be referring to all lawmakers responsible for the stimulus bill as monkeys. Either way…….I don’t equate it with any ethnicity.

Well, I think that it can be considered racist. Black people were thought of “monkeys” before, and everyone is very touchy on the subject. Especially right now with our first black president. only the cartoonist really knows whether he meant it to be racist, but i think it was really tasteless. a lot of his other drawings are also somewhat tasteless in a way. check on google to see some of them. im sure they have some online.

At the end of the day evryone has a view on this picture and all the comments show that racism is a part of this world it isnt just going to away because we want it to same with war. I am not a racist person i respect people for who they are and not what colour they are. I mean no offence in what i say but i think some people are reading too much into the picture.

After reading everyone’s comments I realize folks do not understand the underlying issue at play. The “stimulus” chimp exploits a toxic stereotype that whites of Europe and North America have used through the ages to demean black people. The exaggerated characteristics in the cartoon associated are intentionally projected onto blacks. Remember in Don Imus’s radion show where he would refer to a certain black NBA star as a “knuckle-dragging missing link.”

You need to be aware of history and the fact that animals have been used to stereotype people for years. The British would insult the French, as well as the Dutch, as “frogs.” The Nazis used images of rats to dehumanize Jews, and the Irish were caricatured, along with blacks, as ape-like.

So, just stating the “I am not a racist” isn’t good enough. We need to call people on racist behaviour at every turn. BTW - I am a white woman, and I like to think of myself as “not a racist”.

Nancy Pelosi wrote the stimulus bill not Barack Obama. So making the jump from monkey to Barack is a bit far fetched.

…although personally I think the monkey could have done a better job.
