“Sex and the City”: #1 Box Office

June 2, 2008

The fab foursome prove that even after four years, their Cosmo-sipping characters can still pull in the fans. The “Sex and the City” movie came it at number one in the weekend box office ousting “Indiana Jones” and raking in an impressive $55.7 million.

The film was expected to bring in $25-$35 million dollars but ended up being the best debut ever for an R-rated film. (The previous title was held by “American Pie II” which opened at $45.1 million.)

The distributor Warner Bros. gave low estimates because typically males make up the backbone of the box office and this movie didn’t have much hope for pulling in lots of males. Women clearly showed up with many making a girl’s night out of seeing the much awaited film about the NYC clan.

The frenzy around the movie made Friday the biggest money making night for the film and had 85 percent females in the audience.

I saw the movie and no I won’t see and tell but I have to admit that after going through all the men and ups and downs in the show, the “Sex and the City” gals continue to provide entertaining tales of their lives. I was surprised at how much I felt like I knew the characters after such a long courtship and then reminiscing with every rerun. It made me want to run out and buy Manolo’s and drink a Cosmo, I know that much!
