Ex-Police Cheif gets 32 months

Calling him arrogant, reckless and without remorse, a judge on Wednesday sentenced a former police chief to 32 months in prison for breaking in to the home of a surrogate mother who was carrying twins for the actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
“Your attorney began this trial by saying what you did may have been stupid but it wasn’t criminal,” the judge, John M. Solovan of Belmont County Court, told the former chief, Barry P. Carpenter. “I disagree. It was stupid, and it was criminal.”
A jury last month found Mr. Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence and theft in office, though it acquitted him of the three most serious charges of burglary.
He was the police chief of Martins Ferry, Ohio, and prosecutors accused him and two other men, including another police chief, of conspiring to steal items from the surrogate’s home and sell them to tabloid newspapers.
Judge Solovan told Mr. Carpenter, 40, that he gave him the most time — two years — on the felony charge of tampering with evidence because “this offense is more significant than the theft in office because the cover-up is always more significant.”

The TLC network is suing Jon Gosselin for breaching his contract as star of the now-shelved Jon & Kate Plus 8.
The lawsuit, filed Friday in Maryland, alleges that the Father of the Year (just kidding) hasn’t met the obligations of his contract as an exclusive employee, has appeared on other programs for pay and made unauthorized disclosures about the show.
The network didn’t mention Jon’s various affairs with bartenders, nannies and college students.
Alleged Travolta Extortionists Haggled on Video

Secret police videos have captured the alleged extortionists in the John Travolta case in deep conflict … with one defendant accusing the other of trying to settle way too cheap — this according to law enforcement sources.
As we first reported yesterday, authorities have at least two videos of paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and attorney Pleasant Bridgewater demanding millions of dollars from John Travolta’s lawyers, in return for not making a document public.
Our sources say Bridgewater is caught on tape demanding many millions of dollars, but another video shows Lightbourne outraged that Bridgewater demanded what he considered such a paltry sum. His demand was exponentially higher than hers, law enforcement sources tell TMZ.
We’re told the videos show them haggling over money — and although it’s been reported the pair allegedly demanded $25 million, we’re told they finally agreed to $15 mil.
We’re also told lawyers for Bridgewater and Lightbourne will make a motion today to suppress the videos, on grounds they were illegally recorded.
And there’s a sticky problem — we’re told one of the key Bahamian cops in the video sting was seriously injured “under suspicious circumstances” and is unable to testify.
Travolta has not finished testifying. We’re told he has left the Bahamas and will return next week to complete his testimony.
