Tom Sparks really wipesout, and dies

November 13, 2009 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

The death of Tom Sparks, a 33-year-old former TV host from California who was participating as a third-season contestant on ABC’s reality show “Wipeout,” likely was caused by a pre-existing condition, but the Los Angeles County coroner’s office is still examining all possibilities.

Sparks died on November 5 of an apparent stroke that his doctors believe was triggered by a pre-existing disease that causes unnatural blood clotting, according to a statement his father released to the Idaho Mountain Express. Sparks previously had worked in radio in Idaho, according to his résumé.

An autopsy was conducted on November 8, but test results are still pending.

“There’s nothing we can confirm until we look at everything,” the coroner’s office told CNN. “We don’t want to jump to any conclusions yet.”

A source close to the production company that produces “Wipeout” for ABC said that Sparks began to complain of knee pain while running through the first part of an obstacle course challenge during taping on October 19.

Although Sparks was in good spirits, the spokesperson said, producers pulled him from the course. Medics realized he was also experiencing shortness of breath and sent Sparks to a hospital close to “Wipeout’s” set.

The widow of actor Patrick Swayze has spoken about her grief at her first public appearance since his death.

Speaking at the Women’s Conference in Long Beach, California, Lisa Niemi said Swayze’s passing last month left her feeling sadness “on a cellular level”.

“I thought during the 22 months of my husband’s illness that it gave me all this time to get used to the idea of losing him,” she said on Tuesday.

“It wasn’t the same at all. The actual loss is an animal of its own.”

Her husband’s death, she continued, “made all the sadness and grief previous to that look like an intellectual concept”

Anna Nicole’s Final Days

October 14, 2009 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

Anna Nicole Smith was ill, confused and isolated in a hotel room with a cornucopia of prescription drugs in the days before her death, an investigator testified Tuesday in a criminal case stemming from the celebrity model’s overdose death.

California Department of Justice investigator Danny Santiago testified that witnesses said Smith was unable to walk unassisted into the Florida hotel, and she was so weak she could not sit up to drink liquids.

The testimony was presented in a preliminary hearing involving charges that Smith’s former lawyer-boyfriend Howard K. Stern and two California doctors conspired to illegally provide Smith with controlled substances before her drug-overdose death at age 39.

Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry, who will decide if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial, noted the defendants have not been accused of killing Smith and questioned the relevance when prosecutor Renee Rose asked Santiago about Smith’s cause of death.

“There is not a murder charge,” Perry said. “The cause of death is not an issue.”

Ashley Jewell, the fiancé of Kandi Burruss, a castmember of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta, has died from an injury sustained during a brawl outside an Atlanta strip club, TV station WBSTV reports.

“It appears he was involved in an altercation in the parking lot and he received a severe blow to the head,” Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows told the TV station. Jewell was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Jewell, known as A.J., appeared regularly on the hit reality show, often clashing with Burruss’s mother, who disapproved of her daughter’s relationship.

Burruss’s publicist Lisa Nelson confirmed to the Atlanta station that Burruss, a singer-songwriter who recorded with the band Xscape and worked with TLC and Mariah Carey, has been informed of the incident and was “stunned and speechless.”

Police said they have not determined a motive for the brawl, but the investigation is still under way.

“We have developed a person of interest and we’ve made contact with him to question him about the incident,” said Lt. Meadows.

John Travolta Back in Court

October 1, 2009 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

John Travolta returned to the witness stand today and testified that the Bahamian medic accused of trying to blackmail him was allegedly threatening to say that Travolta was at fault in his son Jett’s death.

The actor was called back to the stand to confirm that on Jan. 16, two weeks after Jett died, he had been notified by his bodyguard and his attorney that someone was demanding $25 million and, if it wasn’t paid, a document Travolta signed to refuse transporting Jett to a local hospital would be “sold to the press.”

Showing no emotion, Travolta told the court in Nassau that paramedic Tarino Lightbourne allegedly threatened that the leaked document would result in “stories that would imply that the death of my son was intentional … that I was culpable in some way.”

On cross-examination, Travolta admitted that he was never called or threatened personally by either of the defendants — Lightbourne or Bahamian lawmaker Pleasant Bridgewater, who is also charged with blackmailing Travolta.

The case against the pair has always alleged that the threats were made through Travolta’s bodyguards and attorney.

Travolta was released by the judge and is not expected to reappear in court. He left with wife Kelly Preston, holding hands and surrounded by security.
