Erin Andrew’s stalker gets 30 months in Federal Prison

ESPN’s Erin Andrews gets some vindication as a judge sentences her stalker to 30 months in jail. Michael David Barrett, 48, received the maximum of 30 months in prison after pleading guilty of interstate stalking. Prosecutors accused him of following Andrews to at least three cities and videotaping her through hotel peepholes while she was naked. He would then post them to the internet.

Erin Andrews was not his only victim. According to a sentencing memo filed last month, he also stalked 16 other victims in the same manner.

Barrett made an apology in court saying, “There are no words to tell Ms. Andrews how sorry I am for what I’ve done to her — I hope someday she can forgive me.” Andrews scoffed at his appology and said, “You violated me and you violated all women. You are a sexual predator, a sexual deviant and they should lock you up.”

More charges could come for Michael Barrett in the future.

A Chicago judge is expected to decide Monday whether to release on bail the man accused of stalking ESPN reporter Erin Andrews and allegedly secretly videotaping her nude.

Michael David Barrett, a 47-year-old insurance company employee, has been held in jail since his arrest Friday at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. A federal magistrate judge must decide whether to return him to California as a prisoner or free him on bail.

Barrett is accused of trying to sell videos of Andrews to celebrity Web site TMZ.com and posting them online. He faces interstate stalking charges in Los Angeles, where TMZ is based. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

His neighbors in a Chicago suburb said Sunday they were surprised by his arrest. Barrett kept his yard manicured, played golf and enjoyed cooking on a gas grill on a patio behind his $300,000 suburban Chicago town house. The normalcy of his life was what made the accusations so upsetting to neighbors and acquaintances.

A Chicago-area man was arrested Friday night at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on federal charges of interstate stalking for allegedly recording nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, posting them on the Internet and attempting to sell them to a celebrity news site.

Michael David Barrett, a 48-year-old man from Westmont, Illinois, was named in a criminal complaint filed late Friday.

The complaint alleges that Barrett “with the intent to harass, to place under surveillance with intent to harass and intimidate, and to cause substantial emotional distress to a person in another state, namely E.A., used facilities of interstate commerce, including cellular telephone networks, electronic mail, and Internet Web sites, to engage in a course of conduct that caused substantial emotional distress to E.A.”

Barrett aka “Mark Bennett” is accused of filming Andrews on at least two occasions, and is accused of having “surreptitiously” recorded nude videos of her without her knowledge and consent.

The complaint also alleges that Barrett stayed in an adjacent hotel room next to where Andrews stayed, where a “tampered peephole” was found. According to the complaint, he specifically asked to stay in the room next to Andrews when making his reservation.

Barrett is expected to make his initial court appearance Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
