Simon Cowell:Perez Hilton ‘could work’ on ‘Idol’

February 19, 2010 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

Simon Cowell says neither Howard Stern nor Madonna is the right choice to take his place on American Idol.

In a press call yesterday evening, he dismissed talk about Stern and doubted Madonna would have the time, but said gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who has his own music label under Warner Music Group, might be a good fit.

“Perez would be funny,” Cowell said. “He’s got good taste in music, he’s got a personality, that could work.”

And he would love to have Lady Gaga as a mentor for the contestants. “She is the most relevant pop artist in the world right now,” said Cowell. “And she’s very smart. I like her.”

Attention Robert Pattinson fanatics: The world’s most famous tortured bloodsucker can’t stand Halloween. Or at least that’s the humorous way Late Show host Jimmy Fallon portrays a moody version of the Twilight star in the latest installment in his series Robert Is Bothered.

“Halloween bothers me,” sulks Fallon-as-Pattinson. “Costumes are stupid. Are you a werewolf? No you’re not, you’re a person. You can’t fool me. Jackass! No candy!”

“Pumpkins are dumb fat squashes,” Fallon jokes in a fake British accent. “Candy corns are stupid. Are you a candy or are you corn?”

The skit follows previous Robert Is Bothered spoofs on Snickers ads and Shark Week.

Balloon Boy: People are pissed

Paul Pozarnsky, 25, of Fort Collins holds a sign while standing near tripods during a news conference Saturday at the Heene family’s Fort Collins home. Pozarnsky and his brother, Jarrod, both held signs mocking the hoopla. Jarrod Pozarnsky’s sign read: ‘Put balloon boy on TV: America’s Most Wanted.’ (Rich Abrahamson/The Coloradoan)

Falcon Heene made international news after his parents reported the boy, 6, had floated away from the backyard of their Fort Collins home in a UFO-shaped helium balloon Oct. 15. A massive search ensued along the balloon’s approximately 50-mile flight path after the balloon landed empty near Denver International Airport.

The boy eventually emerged from hiding at his parents’ home Thursday evening, and the family immediately began granting television interviews. Within hours, however, the public’s support turned to skepticism and eventually to outright hostility Sunday when Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden declared the whole thing a hoax concocted by the Heene family to get themselves on television.

It worked.

David Letterman lets his jokes work for him

October 8, 2009 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

If there’s one thing David Letterman has learned this week, it’s that a little contrition and self-deprecating humor can go a long way.

After a shocking admission about office affairs and an alleged blackmail plot, The Late Show host is winning back his fans’ respect with jokes (”I got into the car this morning and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me”) and apologies, including one directly to his wife, Regina Lasko, and his staff, whom he thanked for ”putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.” According to the Manhattan district attorney’s office, that ‘’something stupid” came to light after Robert ”Joe” Halderman, a producer at CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery, threatened to expose Letterman’s sexual trysts with employees if the comedian didn’t fork over $2 million. Halderman pled not guilty on October 2, and is next due in court on November 11.

David Letterman makes jokes about himself

October 7, 2009 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

In spite of his affairs and the scandal surrounding an attempted embezzling of hush money from him, David Letterman is handling the situation with the same approach and satire he would as if the event was happening to someone else. Here are some of his latest jokes about himself.

On Monday night’s show, Letterman opened with a reference to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose own extramarital affair had made him a previous Letterman target.

“I mean, I’ll be honest with you folks — right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail,” he joked about Sanford’s infamous phony alibi.

“I got into the car this morning,” he continued, “and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.”
