Polanski loses bid to stay out of US Courts

January 23, 2010 by m.coonce · Leave a Comment

Film director Roman Polanski has lost his bid to be sentenced in a US court without having to return.

He faces an arrest warrant over his conviction, 32 years ago, for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

A judge ruled on Friday that Mr Polanski, 76, must be present in court if he wants to resolve the case.

Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza said he was acting to protect “the dignity of the court.” Mr Polanski’s lawyer said he would appeal the ruling.

Mr Polanski was arrested in Switzerland last September over his 1977 conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

He left the US in 1978 before he could be sentenced and has never returned.

Polanski, whose lawyer has recently said was suffering from depression, is still in Swiss custody as he waits for US authorities to make an official extradition request.

Detained Academy Award-winning director and convicted sex offender Roman Polanski may have the support of some famous faces in the film industry, but don’t count Jamie Foxx among them. According to the actor, he only needs to imagine the 1977 case against Polanski is a personal one to find his feelings.

“If it had been my daughter who was barely a teenager — my daughter is 15 — Roman Polanski would be missing … period,” Foxx stated in an interview with Parade magazine. “It wouldn’t even get to the court case. But, that’s me and I wouldn’t want anyone else to follow that because you should let the justice system work it out.”

Foxx went on to explain that while his perspective might have been different had he known the director personally, as do many of his Hollywood peers, ultimately he believes “this whole issue is bigger than Roman Polanski.” So big, it forces Foxx to confront his own complex sense of revenge.

For the second time in one week, Mackenzie Phillips sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Friday (September 25) to discuss her allegations of an over 10-year incestuous relationship with her father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. This time she was joined by her younger sister Chynna.

When asked if she thought it was a good idea to be speaking out after all these years, she responded. “My answer to that is — and I understand this is a difficult thing for my family — nobody’s talking about this,” she told Oprah. “So if I started a national dialogue that will help people face this issue, I am forever grateful.”
