Must Be Nice
Polish director Roman Polanski’s family is thanking French President Nicolas Sarkozy for being “very effective” in helping to win his release from a Swiss prison.
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it is thanks to the President that Roman has been freed, but he has been super,” Polanski’s sister-in-law, Mathilde Seigner, told Le Parisien newspaper. “The President has been very effective.”
The London Times speculated that Sarkozy’s wife, ex-model Carla Bruni, may have pressured her husband to intervene because she used to hob nob with Paris’ artistic community, which includes Polanski and wife Emmanuelle Seigner.
After initially balking at his release, Swiss authorities agreed to let Polanski move from a cell to his luxurious Alpine chalet once he puts up $4.5 million bail.
A bracelet will allow police to monitor Polanski , but the device does not include a global positioning system to track him should he escape.
“We can only check if the person is at home,” Jonas Peter Weber, a professor at the University of Bern, told the Times. “If the alarm goes off and no police is in the vicinity, the person will be able to flee.”
Sarkozy was first criticized for supporting Polanski in October. He expressed outrage after the director was arrested at a Zurich airport on a U.S. warrant from 1977 for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

ABC says Chris Brown will appear on its “20/20″ newsmagazine Dec. 11.
In what’s billed as an in-depth interview, the singer will discuss his assault of ex-girlfriend and recording superstar Rihanna in February. He is on probation for the beating.
Robin Roberts, anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” conducts the interview. It was taped last weekend.
ABC spokesman Jeffrey Schneider says clips may also air on “Good Morning America.” He says Brown will not perform live.
Brown is scheduled to release his album “Graffiti” on Dec. 8. He has previously spoken about the attack on MTV News and “Larry King Live.”
Rihanna was interviewed this month by ABC’s Diane Sawyer.

Released to Theaters Nov 12th
Even the Maya would have struggled to forecast an opening weekend this big.
Sony Pictures’ “2012,” the latest end-of-the-world epic from disaster director Roland Emmerich, took in $65 million in the U.S. and Canada and an earth-shattering $160 million elsewhere for a worldwide weekend total of $225 million.
The 162-minute thriller, based on a purported Maya prophecy that the world will end Dec. 21, 2012, will easily make back its production and marketing costs for Sony long before that date rolls around. The movie cost about $200 million to make and tens of millions more to market. Most industry observers and pre-release forecasts had “2012″ opening above $50 million domestically.
It has yet to open in several major international markets, including Japan.
“It’s going to be a very big success for our studio,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s distribution president.
For Emmerich, “2012″ had his second-biggest domestic opening, behind his 2004 disaster film “The Day After Tomorrow,” which opened to almost $70 million. However, that end-of-the-world movie was released on a three-day holiday weekend.
