Four time Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams is in the UK playing in Eastbourne’s Aegon International. She recently told sources that she suffered from a mystery illness that almost took her life earlier this year. The illness began with a cut on her foot.
“I’m so excited to be back,” she said. “I was on my death bed at one point — quite literally.”
“To this day I don’t really know the full details of what happened,” she said. “I was with my nephew and my hitting partner and we were just leaving a restaurant. I was walking and just felt something. I kept walking and it was definitely glass there. There was a massive puddle of blood. I ended up fainting and needed stitches in both feet.”
Then the injury became life threatning.
“At first people said it would be fine, it would be all right but it turned out to be a lot more serious,” she continued. “If it had been left two days later it could have been career-ending — or even worse. They told me I had several blood clots in both lungs. A lot of people die from that.”
She went on to say, “It got to the stage where it felt like I could hardly breathe. Some days I didn’t get out of bed at all. I just laid on a couch thinking ‘why has this happened to me?’”
The tennis pro had surgery in February.
“Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment … for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” her rep, Nicole Chabot, said in a statement at the time. Chabot went on to say that Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism.
Williams is back on the court and continuing her career.
“This has given me a whole new perspective on life and my career — and not taking anything for granted,” she said. “I’m just taking one day at a time. I’m not preparing for today or for Wimbledon. I’m preparing for the rest of my career.”

A man suspected of stalking Serena Williams was arrested on the grounds of her home in Florida on Monday night.
Patenema Ouedraogo, 40, attempted to walk onto the tennis pros estate but security guards were able to stop the man. Ouedraogo had been named by Williams as her stalker previously. He had love letters on him with Williams’ name on them.
Williams was in New York at the Met Gala.
Ouedraogo was taken into custody and is charged with cyber-stalking and stalking Williams. Sources say if he makes bail he will be on house arrest.
He was well-known by Williams’ security team to be her stalker and Williams had said in the past that she is “terrified” of him. When she appeared on the Home Shopping Network, Ouedraogo had pretended to be her assistant and even went into her dressing room. Shortly after, he was escorted from the premises.
The tennis player had previously gotten a restraining order against him, but he could not be found to serve the papers to. He has now been ordered by the court to stay at least 500 feet from Williams.
