“The Dark Knight”: $155.3 Million Breaks Box Office Records

The Dark Knight
The sixth Batman movie, The Dark Knight earned a lot of hype going into opening weekend with Heath Ledger’s death and it ended up performing quite well.

The film opened Friday and achieved the best opening day and single day in history by earning $66.4 million and surpassing the former record set by Spider-Man III which earned $59.8 million last year.

It also broke the record for most money made from Friday midnight shows by raking in $18.5 million. (Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith brought in $16.9 million.)

And to complete the hat trick it broke the three-day opening weekend record with $155.3 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday. (Spider-Man III made $151.1 million.)

“We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did,” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Brothers, said.

The number 2 spot was taken by Mamma Mia!, which also broke the record to become the biggest premiere ever for a movie musical bringing in $27.6 million.

With such big openings, the other movies playing didn’t get as much attention.
3. Hancock - $14 million
4. Journey to the Center of the Earth - $11.9 million
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army - $10 million

Hopefully wherever Heath Ledger is right now, he’s smiling at the success of his latest work and what could be the biggest role of his life.
