The Hurt Locker beat out Avatar for Best Picture and Best Director

March 8, 2010

It was kinda like watching David versus Goliath when the low budget film went against the $300 million dollar film, Avatar, along with the other Hollywood blockbusters that came out in 2009. Bigelow dedicated the win to all the men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bigelow was up on stage a second time to accept best director award. Bigelow is the first female director to win this prestigous award. She said, “This really — there’s no other way to describe it — it’s the moment of a lifetime.”

As she exited the stage, the Helen Reddy’s women’s-lib anthem, “I Am Woman,” played.

Congrats to Bigelow!
