Hollywood Feels The Need To Turn Asian MIT Genuises Into Pretty White People

January 28, 2008

I read the book ‘Bringing Down The House‘ years ago, thought it was a really great read and was looking forward to the film version coming out later this year. The book is about a group of MIT students who who made boatloads of money in Vegas with an elaborate card counting scheme.

The two main characters of the book are of Asian descent

Jeff Ma and Mike Aponte:

So obviously, I was wondering how Hollywood would handle that, since you know, movies typically have beautiful white people in the lead roles.

But never fear, Hollywood decided to cast the leads as Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth (wtf, even a gender change?), so crisis averted, right?

Check out the trailer for 21 here so you can fully feel the outrage. Every time you think Hollywood can’t stoop a little lower they somehow manage to find a way.

unfortunately, this stuff been going on 4ever, especially when takes place in asia. no one in hollywood ever made a movie about pol pot, but there was THE KILLING FIELDS, about white ny times writer over there. lots of white slumming movies. and evil oliver stone had gringos in SALVADOR movie too.

Your comments are racist against white people and obnoxious. I am offended that you think complaining about white people is okay. You are just speaking hate and encouraging hate. Your politics of envy is not attractive. The actors chosen will attract a broad market of people.

savannah probably wont even read this, but wtf? i don’t see how pointing out that hollywood is racist against asian leads is offensive to white people. it’s infuriating that you even thought any of what you wrote. and “The actors chosen will attract a broad market of people.”? so basically you’re saying asian leads won’t attract as large an audience; and that that racist mentality, if true, is legit while pointing out the fact is racist. lovely. now get that silver spoon out of your ass. i found your comment racist and think white people like you are obnoxious.

the movie will not do well if they dont cast asian leads. they should get the actual people not actors.. that would be new and refreshing.

You know, I think Savannah and Travis underestimate the viewing public. I read the book and loved it — and I would prefer that hollywood cast actors/actresses that are *realistic,* not the stereotypical glamorpuss types they usually cast. Jon Cho and Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar), for example, would have been far better choices than Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth.

Frankly, despite the fact that I was really looking forward to the “movie” version after reading “bringing down the house,” I have *NO* interest in seeing the Sturgess/Bosworth version.

Finally, let’s be honest here… even if the real MIT students had been caucasian, Hollywood would *still* cast stereotypical glamorpuss types (far too beautiful to ever be mistaken for a real MIT student) for the roles.

[...] movie 21 is an example of how Hollywood takes a real story and “glamorizes” it? Top Socialite suggests it is, taking the two Asian main characters in the book and changing their race and even gender, [...]

Oh, so there are no asian actors? I won’t see if it doesn’t stick to the actual events (including Asian people in it). So sick of racism.

Savannah writes “The actors chosen will attract a broad market of people.”

If this is indeed true, Barrack Obama will loose by a bigger margin than any Democrat since 1998…and who knows the Hollywood execs may be reading more accurately into the racism of the white Americans than the media, Obama or Oprah.
